NCCI Member Named to National Taskforce

Seventy-eight officials of public colleges and universities have been named to help devise a new voluntary system of accountability that is being planned — as a supplement to existing accreditation and other measures — by the National Association of State Universities and Land-Grant Colleges and the American Association of State Colleges and Universities. The plan for the new voluntary system came amid complaints from Education Secretary Margaret Spellings and others that existing systems were not doing enough to promote accountability. During 2007, the participants will work as taskforces and technical groups developing a system of accountability that could be adopted at any public college or university.

Two NCCI Members Appointed to National Rulemaking Committee

Every five to seven years, the U.S. Department of Education seeks input from interested parties regarding ideas for new regulations. The process, known as a rulemaking negotiation, was developed by federal agencies originally to help promulgate environmental regulations, In this year's round of rulemaking, Brent Ruben and John Dew were both selected to serve on the rulemaking negotiation. This is a summary of the issues that were discussed in their first meeting.

MIT’s Leader to Leader: Building Leadership Capacity

The Massachusetts Institute of Technology’s provost, the deans of its five schools and its vice president for research entered the meeting room, found their nameplates and spontaneously exchanged them with one another — a gesture that represented both the group’s humor and the camaraderie between them. They were in this meeting room on this recent morning to hold a panel discussion for a group of 20 MIT administrators who were participating in a 12-month leadership development program called Leader to Leader (L2L). Effective Practices for Increasing Student Access

Student access and success are greatly influenced by, and sometimes dependent on, how well colleges and universities function.  Institutions are being challenged internally and externally to become increasingly effective in their programs/services and increasingly successful in enhancing quality through continuous improvement.   In response to these challenges, NCCI is co-sponsoring with the American Council on Education (ACE) a one-day workshop on Effective Practices for Increasing AccessThis workshop is an all-day pre-conference session in Washington, D.C., on February 11, 2007, at the upcoming ACE Annual Meeting.  (See www.aceannualmeeting.org)

NCCI Establishes the Brent D. Ruben Award

The National Consortium for Continuous Improvement in Higher Education (NCCI) awarded the first Brent D. Ruben award to its namesake at their annual conference in Honolulu on July 7, 2006.

Dr. Brent Ruben was the founder of NCCI, originally incorporated in 1999. NCCI has now grown to a vibrant association of over 70 institutions from across the nation and six countries. Dr. Ruben began the institution with the support of NACUBO (National Association of College and University Business Officers). A few years later, NCCI became an independent association, while continuing a mutually beneficial partnership with NACUBO. NCCI has also established a collaborative relationship with the American Council on Education (ACE).
