In 1999, as today, a number of colleges and universities were struggling to become more effective, efficient, service-oriented institutions. No single association brought together the campus leaders charged with overseeing these initiatives, to facilitate the sharing of best practices and to promote these purposes nationally. NCCI was formed to be that association. The Brent D. Ruben Award is presented to a NCCI member in appreciation of their leadership in founding and sustaining NCCI to advance excellence in higher education
The Fifth Brent D. Ruben Award was presented posthumously to the family of Roderick "Rick" Wallick in 2011.

Ron Coley receives the Fourth Brent D. Ruben Award
Ron Coley, the Associate Vice Chancellor for Business & Administration at the University of California, Berkeley, received the fourth Brent D. Ruben Award for 2009 in appreciation of his leadership in sustaining NCCI to advance excellence in higher education. Outgoing President Rick Wallick presented the award to Coley at the annual Luncheon/NCCI Business Meeting on Friday, June 26, 2009, in Boston. Coley is a long-time member of the Board of Directors and will serve as Treasurer on the 2009-2010 Board. Dr. Ruben was the founding chair of NCCI.
In presenting the award, Wallick said Coley " as one of the founders of NCCI a decade ago has provided important leadership and foresight in the establishment and development of NCCI." Coley's many accomplishments, Wallick said, include his key role in the establishment and success of the Leveraging Excellence Award program. Coley also was instrumental in developing a collaborative relationship with the Follett Higher Education Group. He also played a key role in the establishment of NCCI as a separately incorporated entity.
