NCCI Officers and Committee Chairs Conference Call, November 14, 2003

1. Roundtable update.
• Maury Cotter talked with one participant, John C. Anderson, Associate
Dean of Administration, Carlson School of Management, University of Minnesota.
He termed the event “awesome” and wants to continue NCCI involvement.
Richard Norman reported that Miami’s Provost, Ronald Crutcher, was impressed
and wants to do more.
• Feedback to date slim but generally positive except for comments about
over- processing and insufficient connection time. A historic event and well
received.
• Susan Clarke and Maury Cotter to send a second request for feedback to
non- respondent participants.
Follow up promotion.
• Basic article drafted. Susan Clarke to insert additional material from
David Ward’s comments after videotape review.
• Article featuring Jay Morley’s keynote sent to NACUBO for January
issue of Business Officer. John Dew to send photographs to Gerry Romano, (gerry.romano@nacubo.org)
editor, for possible use with article.
• Maury Cotter to explore publication by ACE in The Presidency.
• Ron Coley, Maury Cotter, Susan Clarke to develop a template article to
be sent to each participant for appearance in each institution’s or association's
publication.
• Maury Cotter to get advice from communications staff at Wisconsin, Madison.
Videotapes.
• Copies are in the mail to Maury Cotter, Brent Ruben, and John Dew for
review and decisions about which segments to retain.
• Keynotes might be used on web site. Reporting out segments might be helpful
in gaining greater understanding of the contents of the flip chart sheets.
• Susan Clarke to get permission from David Ward and Jay Morley and to
arrange to have videotapes available at Milwaukee for playing.
Connections and follow up.
• Susan Clarke has sent each person a reminder about which people he or
she volunteered to call. The list is also shown at the end of this report.
• John Dew sees two major outcome projects--a project related to accreditation,
Baldrige and a grant and turning the NCCI web site into a resource center that
many will want to utilize.
• John Dew, Maury Cotter, Brent Ruben, Kate Riley, and Louise Sandmeyer
to review and “digest” the flip chart notes and to identify the themes
and ideas of the Roundtable. They will prepare a communication for Roundtable
participants that includes those ideas and also describes NCCI’s projects
coming out of the event.
• Molly Nearing to provide consensus, majority, and unique items from flip
charts to the Roundtable committee.
• Maury Cotter to set up conference call of the “digestion” group.
• John Dew to have initial, detailed reports typed up for placement on
the web page. Participants to be notified when they are available.
2. Executive Council Retreat, February 6, 2004
• John Dew working with Paula Gill, Molly Nearing, and Louise Sandmeyer
to plan event.
• Possible beginning with SWOT (strengths, weaknesses, opportunities and
threats) analysis. John Dew to consider preparation for this by getting electronic
input from Executive Council members in advance.
• John Dew to invite Susan Jurow to attend the February 5, 2004 hubinar
and to participate in the Executive Council retreat. He will advise her that
ACE representative Ben Quillian has been invited to participate.
• Maury Cotter to invite Ben Quillian to retreat, acknowledging that Susan
Jurow has been invited to participate.
3. Dallas Hubinar plans
• Van Gray and committee have developed a program that focuses on strategic
budgeting and cost reallocation. It will include Ben Quillian of ACE as keynote
speaker, a panel of three success stories, and a TILMAG exercise led by Bob Dale
designed to encourage participants to apply at their own institutions the lessons
gained during the morning sessions.
• Maury Cotter to get material designed in a flyer. Van Gray and Molly
Nearing to provide content, including hotel and registration information.
• Susan Clarke to confirm registration process with NACUBO.
4. Milwaukee 2004 Annual Conference
• Committee met November 11, 2003. Appropriate theme is how to continue
quality in time of cutback. It is desirable to attract provosts and academic
participants.
• Richard Norman will explore EACUBO June meeting on similar topic for
possible presentations.
• John Dew will discuss with Richard Norman possible role for SACS people
on the relationship of cost-cutting to quality enhancement program.
• Richard Norman to explore speaker knowledgeable about government and
higher education.
• John Dew to follow up with Paula Gill about NCCI slot at NACUBO annual
meeting.
5. Webinars
• First webinar held November 12, 2003 on dashboard indicators attracted
96 institutions.
• John Dew to ask Maryann Terrana to provide an archive copy to Ron Coley.
• Suggestions made for improvements in future such program, including advance
peer review of content.
• John Dew to ask Ed Cunliff to follow up and gather lessons learned.
• All to be alert to Strategic Planning webinar scheduled for November
19, 2003.
6. Membership. See attached report from Marsha Moore
7. Database use. Approval for NACUBO to use for one time mailing to
promote Intentional Design and the Process of Change. Next NCCI email
newsletter also to carry information about that publication as well as
information about Brent Ruben’s new book that demonstrates quality
concepts at work.
8. Finances. So far, so good. Relatively few expenses incurred and recorded.
9. Next conference call. Monday, December 15, 2003.
